The Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB) has issued an advisory warning citizens about a rise in Chrome-based cyber attacks and WhatsApp takeover frauds, commonly known as Ghost Pairing attacks.
The advisory said that Chrome attacks occur when users visit malicious websites or click harmful links that exploit browser vulnerabilities to steal sensitive data, including saved banking credentials. The bureau also cautioned against WhatsApp Ghost Pairing scams, in which victims are deceived into sharing a WhatsApp code through fake messages or links, allowing attackers to secretly link their own devices and monitor chats without disrupting normal app activity.
The bureau advised users who suspect a compromise to immediately check the ‘Linked Devices’ section on WhatsApp and remove any unfamiliar devices, enable two-step verification, and stop using the affected browser or application. Citizens were urged to document evidence by saving screenshots, transaction details and call logs, update Google Chrome to the latest version, and change passwords for email, banking and social media accounts. Banks and payment apps should be informed if any financial loss is detected.
The TGCSB further cautioned the public against sharing OTPs, PINs, CVVs or WhatsApp codes, clicking on urgent or unfamiliar links, or logging into unknown websites or pop-up windows.
