A video clip of a police sub-inspector dragging a youth by his shirt and pushing him into the Alanganallur police station in Madurai district went viral on social media on Sunday. B.K. Arvind, Superintendent of Police, Madurai, said an inquiry into the incident was under way.

A police source said the incident occurred in May, when the police had asked the youth to stay in the police station as his father, Andichamy had gone into hiding during an inquiry in a case relating to a family dispute.

The police had been searching for Andichamy after his mother-in-law Vellaiammal complained that he had borrowed her gold chain and pledged it for personal expenses.

“The man was called for an inquiry, but he did not turn up,” the police said. Hence, one of his sons was asked to come to the police station. When the youth was talking to the sub-inspector at the Alanganallur police station, his sibling, who had accompanied him, secretly recorded a video of the incident on his mobile phone.

In the video, the siblings were heard questioning the authority of the police for pulling the youth by his shirt for a complaint lodged against his father. “The issue was subsequently resolved after Andichamy promised to return the gold chain to Vellaiammal,” the police said.

While the incident is said to have occurred on May 28, 2025, the video clipping was only posted on social media on Sunday. Mr. Arvind has ordered the Deputy Superintendent of Police, Samayanallur, to conduct an inquiry into the incident.

Uthiraraja, the sub-inspector in question, and other police personnel, who were present at the station during the incident, are being inquired. Based on the outcome, appropriate action would be taken, Mr. Arvind said.
