A forest labourer was injured when a crocodile attacked him while it was being rescued at the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) in Mumbai, an official from the forest department said on Saturday (July 12, 2025).

Teams from the SGNP and other agencies were involved in rescuing a marsh crocodile near Kanheri Caves inside the national park on Friday (July 11, 2025), the official said.

He said one of the rescuers, Rajendra Bhoir, sustained injuries when the reptile attacked him and is undergoing treatment at the hospital.

The SGNP and other rescue teams across the state have forest labourers, also known as ‘vanmajur’, who don’t have life insurance coverage and are not provided risk allowance, another forest official said.

He said Bhoir had been attacked by a tiger under treatment at the national park earlier this month.
