Members of the Students’ Federation of India submitted a petition with the District Collector K.J. Praveen Kumar here on Monday demanding to restart admission to Sociology department at Madurai Kamaraj University college.

A. Reyham Suman, SFI branch secretary, said that the Sociology Department at MKU college was opened about three years ago.

Though admissions were carried out for the last three years and the students were still studying in the department, the admissions have been abruptly stopped this year, he added.

Due to that, many students from rural areas waiting for admission to such an important course were denied admission this year, Mr. Suman noted.

The college catered to the needs of hundreds of students from the district and even nearby districts. Hence, it should have issued a notification regarding the cancellation of admission in the current academic year, he said.

Though the college authorities cited administrative reasons and insufficient faculties as the reason for cancellation of admission, it was the responsibility of the institution to rectify that and restart the admissions, he stated.

As the college had reasoned that they have insufficient staff to handle the classes, then what about the state of Sociology students in their second and third years, Mr. Suman questioned.

MKU college administration said that the course was not cancelled, but, due to administrative reasons, the admissions were kept in abeyance.
