With the completion of tensile roofing, the construction work of the Kovil Vazhi bus stand, designed to serve as the third terminus in Tiruppur city, for mofussil buses bound for southern districts, has been completed.

The bus stand project on a five-acre expanse, undertaken with an allocation of ₹26 crore from the Infrastructure and Amenities Fund was to have been inaugurated by the Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Tuesday.

The bus stand with 45 bus bays will be utilised by the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation to operate over 250 trips a day, official sources said.

About 75% of the 35 shops have been allotted under tender system. The two-wheeler parking facility can accommodate 550 vehicles, Corporation sources added.

An additional allocation of ₹8.8 crore was made earlier this year for cement concrete flooring in the bus stand. Bitumen surface was planned earlier, and the cement concrete flooring was decided upon subsequently for higher durability.

The bus stand also encompasses a restaurant, a nursing pod for mothers, elevators, toilets, drinking water, rooms for police personnel, a surveillance room, and an information centre.

The space in the front portion of the bus stand is now being utilised by the buses. The bus stand in the sixth ward in Third Zone is expected to be put to use in entirety shortly, official sources said, adding that it would help in reducing vehicular traffic congestion in the city limits to a considerable extent.
