Condemning the delay by the State government in implementing internal reservation among the Scheduled Castes as per a Supreme Court judgment, the district units of Madiga organisations will stage a State-wide protest on August 1.
The former Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment A. Narayanswamy, addressing presspersons here on Friday, said that the Madiga organisations across the State will stage the protest in their respective districts urging the Siddaramaiah-led government to implement internal reservation among Scheduled Castes before the upcoming session of the State Legislature begins.
He warned that the Madiga community will intensify the agitation and launch a non-cooperation movement if the government turns a deaf ear to their long-pending demand and continue to deprive the oppressed section of its rights.
He said that the State-wide protest is scheduled on August 1 to mark one year of the landmark judgment of the Supreme Court that ruled that States can implement internal reservation among Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.
On August 1 last year, a seven-judge Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court led by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud upheld the validity of sub-classification within Scheduled Castes categories.
Accusing the Congress-led State government of neglecting the rights of the Scheduled Castes Left Communities (Madiga), Mr. Narayanswamy said that the Madiga community has been fighting for internal reservations for the last 30 years.
Other States such as Haryana, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab and Telangana have implemented internal reservation among Scheduled Castes but the Congress which promised implementing internal reservation in its manifesto for the 2023 Assembly elections is dilly-dallying on granting the sub-quota, he added.
