Green initiative

An eco firefly cloth bag is being provided at the entry point of Yercaud hill station, to encourage tourists to use cloth bags instead of single use plastic bags that pollutes the reserved zone. A similar initiative should be implemented by Kanniyakumari district administration, for the visitors to the soon to be opened biosphere reserve in Keeriparai, thereby promoting green initiatives in reserved zones.

Congestion returns

Samanathapuram corner in Palayamkottai continues to remain a traffic congested location, despite authorities having converted the melvein zone roundabout into a circular pathway to allow smoother vehicular movement from key three directions such as one from Thoothukudi, another from Tirunelveli and third towards Palayamkottai bus stand.

Although bus stops are 100 meters away from the circle, many buses still stop at the turning to board passengers. As a result, traffic congestion has returned, similar to how it was in the past. Strict action should be taken by authorities concerned against bus drivers, who halt in the turn to pick up passengers.

Extend connectivity

The recently launched Vande Bharat Express between Bengaluru and Madurai has been a welcome addition. Although there remains a significant gap in efficient connectivity for passengers beyond Madurai, especially people from the Kanniyakumari district. The region has a large number of passengers commuting to Bengaluru for work, education, healthcare etc,. Currently, one direct train from Nagercoil is being operated to Bengaluru which is often overcrowded and inadequate to meet the growing demand. Extending the Vande Bharat express service from Madurai to Nagercoil would greatly benefit these commuters, providing a moderate, reliable and time saving travel option.

Traffic void

Tirunelveli and Palayamkottai regions are now having newly constructed roundabouts to ease traffic congestion. Earlier, electronic signals were used to regulate the flow of vehicles. However, after the construction of roundabouts, the signals have been switched off. Although there are sheds for police near the roundabouts, they are unmanned. In Samadhanapuram area, one roundabout has already been damaged due to frequent vehicle overrides. Authorities should take suitable measures to reactivate the traffic signals and deploy personnel on points, to prevent accidents and ensure smooth traffic flow.
