Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president K. Selvaperunthagai has again urged the state government to immediately convene the Legislative Assembly and enact a special law to prevent caste-based ‘honour’ killings.
On Sunday, Mr. Selvaperunthagai visited Arumugamangalam and met the grieving parents and relatives of Kavin Selvaganesh, a Scheduled Caste youth, who was killed recently by the brother of the girl with whom he was in love. The girl belonged to the Most Backward Caste.
“A young man who excelled in academics and was a gold medalist has been murdered. No democratic force can accept this. Anyone with humanity, conscience and faith in democracy cannot tolerate such an act,” the Congress leader said. “This is precisely why we continue to insist on a special law to prevent such caste based honour killings. The Assembly must be convened to pass such legislation,” he said. Mr. Selvaperunthagai urged the government to offer a job for Kavin’s brother in the public sector.
To ensure such heinous crimes do not occur, he emphasised the investigation and verdict in the case must be in a way that restore faith among the people of Tamil Nadu. “We have faith in CBCID’s investigation. Competent officers are handling the case and we believe they will bring the real culprits to justice,” he said.
