Deputy Mayor K. Satish and GVMC Floor Leader (YSRCP) Banala Srinivasa Rao on Sunday (August 3) demanded that the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) cancel the voting rights of defected corporators and make sure they don’t vote in the forthcoming standing committee elections of the corporation on August 6.

Addressing the media, Mr. Satish and Srinivasa Rao said the YSRCP high command has initiated action against the corporators who shifted their support to the NDA after the elections. They demanded to know how the standing committee elections can be conducted when the disqualification petitions against those defected corporators are still pending. They stated that the issue is currently before the High Court and that the District Collector has already issued notices regarding the names of the defectors.

“Allowing the defected corporators to exercise their voting rights in the standing committee elections is a complete violation of rules,” Deputy Mayor K. Satish said. He also demanded that their voting rights be immediately revoked. He further warned that any election held based on the votes of such defectors should be considered as invalid as per regulations.

The standing committee elections are scheduled for August 6, for 10 seats. A total of 21 corporators initially filed their nominations, including 10 from the YSRCP. Following the JSP’s decision to opt out of the race, nine corporators from the TDP and one from the BJP submitted their nominations. Additionally, a corporator who had been supporting the JSP also filed a nomination but later withdrew it. As a result, 20 corporators remain in the fray.

The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has been making arrangements for the elections. The results will be announced the same evening.
