A 50-year-old lifeguard-cum-trainer at the Mangala Swimming Pool of the Mangaluru City Corporation died as he suffered a cardiac arrest while he was in the pool on Sunday. He held the record of performing 28 somersaults under water in a minute and made it to the Guinness World Records in 2003.
MCC Commissioner Ravichandra Naik said K. Chandrashekar Rai was and outsource staff of the MCC. The pool was closed for public on Sunday when Rai got into the water only to be found unconscious after a while by the watchman there.
The watchman immediately called an ambulance that took Rai to the nearest hospital, where the doctors declared him ‘brought in dead’ and that the cause of death was cardiac arrest.
Condoling Rai’s death, rationalist Narendra Nayak, a regular swimmer at the pool, said in a Facebook post that Rai learnt swimming at Mangala pool. He also worked as a manager in a few residential apartments in Manipal, where he also worked as a lifeguard at a pool. A few years ago, Rai started working at the Mangala pool, Mr. Nayak said.
Mr. Nayak said that on Saturday evening, he complimented Rai for maintaining the swimming pool well when Rai then told him that he was on lifeguard duty that day as two others were on leave.
