All India Jamiyyathul Ulama general secretary Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musliar has said that his efforts to secure Indian nurse Nimisha Priyaâs reprieve from death sentence in Yemen were driven solely by a sense of duty, not a desire for recognition.
âWe did not do it for credit,â he said, underscoring the selfless nature of the intervention he made through Yemeni Sufi scholars.
Addressing the valedictory session of a State-level Sahityotsav organised by the Kerala State Sunni Students Federation (SSF) here on Sunday, Mr. Kanthapuram said diplomatic efforts and humanitarian initiatives were leveraged to secure a commutation of Nimisha Priyaâs death sentence.
âMany compassionate people lent their support to the cause. Some others later sought to take credit for it. But for us, it was just about fulfilling our duty. We do not need praise or acknowledgement,â he said.
Allaying fear
âLet us focus on nurturing spiritual growth and educational development in our community. Education is the key to a nationâs prosperity and advancement,â he said. Mr. Kanthapuram allayed fears of Muslims being marginalised or forced out, and reassured their rightful place in the country. âThere is no need to worry. No one can force us out simply because we are Muslims. We belong here,â he said.
He said no one should force their beliefs on others. âInstead, let us work together to provide relief, peace and equality for those in need,â he said.
In the championship, students from Malappuram West topped with 780 points. Malappuram East and Kozhikode South got the second and third positions. About 2,500 students from across the State took part in the Sahityotsav.
