Heads of government arts and science colleges are understood to be in a quandary, as they face difficulty in engaging the students since vacancies caused by retirement have not been filled yet.

The online application process for recruitment of 574 guest lecturers got over on August 4.

The postings will be made only after evaluation of academic qualification and an interview, which may take a minimum of two weeks, according to the college heads.

Meanwhile, the admission counselling for PG programmes under general quota got under way on Wednesday.

The government had extended the last date for students to apply for the PG programmes from July 15 to July 31.

The classes for the PG programmes are scheduled to begin on August 20.

Government colleges located in the rural parts are the worst hit due to shortage of faculty, say some of the parents.

Tamil Nadu’s highest ranking in gross enrolment ratio in higher education makes little sense if the vacancies persist, impacting the teaching-learning process drastically, the Tamil Nadu Government College Teachers Association (TNGCTA) is learnt to have conveyed to the Higher Education Department.

In general, the morale of the guest lecturers who account for the largest proportion of the teaching faculty in government colleges is low.

The GL appointments have to be expedited such that students do not lose out on the teaching-learning days in the odd semester, a functionary of TNGCTA said.
