Musi river in spate claimed the spaces that had rightfully belonged to it, post the heavy rains that had lashed its catchment areas during the past few days.

The river, which is but a seasonal stream that merges with the Krishna river at Wadapally in Nalgonda district, was flowing at its full capacity on Thursday, inundating whatever came on its way. The 100-feet road at Jiyaguda locality went under water as a result, leading to its closure and a traffic nightmare.

“Heavy rains have turned Musa river into a hazard — Jiyaguda Road blocked, crippling traffic & disrupting lives. Citizens suffer from years of negligence. Urgent inspection & permanent solutions needed to protect lives & property,” posted a user named Mohd. Ahmed, on social media platform X.

Flood water inundated the causeway at Moosarambagh on Thursday morning, which too had remained closed for traffic.

Owing to the demolitions and evacuations related to Musi riverfront development project, several areas in Malakpet escaped the flood.

Himayatsagar reservoir received copious flood water from its catchment areas, necessitating release of excess water into the river.

At 3 p.m. on Thursday, the reservoir was receiving 14,000 cusecs of water, while 14,718 cusecs was being released downstream into the river by opening 11 gates by four feet. By 8 p.m., the inflows came down to 8,000 cusecs, and the outflows to 11,733 cusecs through 9 gates, indicating the tapering flood from the upper regions. Inflows into the Osmansagar reservoir remained steady at 2,500 cusecs.

Meanwhile the situation at Jalpally lake too was cause for some concern, with incessant rains resulting in rise in the water level of Umdasagar lake, and Palle Cheruvu – which had breached during 2020 floods, claiming several lives.

GHMC Commissioner R.V. Karnan visited the lake during his field inspection on Thursday. He took stock of the key flood prone areas, reviewed water flow points and monitored the ongoing monsoons safety measures, a statement informed.
