Madurai Collector K.J. Praveen Kumar on Friday participated at the gram sabha meeting held in Devaseri village in Alanganallur Panchayat in Madurai district as part of the 79th Independence Day celebrations.

He told the people that the government was implementing various welfare schemes for the benefit of the people. He said that he was captivated by the green cover in the village. He appreciated the people and urged them to continue to keep the surroundings clean. Government officials were present at the gram sabha meeting.

Students and teachers of Government Boys Higher Secondary School in Elumalai participated at the gram sabha meeting held in Soolapuram. A resolution was passed at the gram sabha to achieve 100 % literacy rate at the village level. Another resolution was passed to completely abolish bonded labour. The students said they learnt about the welfare schemes and their implementation.

At the gram sabha meeting held at Thenkudipatti village in Kambur panchayat in Melur, the people passed a resolution opposing the SIPCOT industrial park project in Melur. They urged the authorities not to establish the industrial park in Melur.

The residents said that establishing the SIPCOT industrial park in the area would affect the flora and fauna of the region. They also said there were many ancient temples in the place. The area should be preserved, they said and urged the authorities to stop the works that have already commenced. They also passed a resolution for better implementation of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) scheme and better wages for the works being carried out under the MGNREGA scheme.
