Seeking police protection even for matters with no apprehension of any serious issue or law and order problem diverts the time and resources of the police, the Kerala High Court has said.
A Bench of Chief Justice Nitin Jamdar and Justice Basant Balaji observed that the police force operated with limited resources and ought to attend to various duties. Routinely ordering police protection under Article 226 of the Constitution, without the apprehension of serious law and order issues, would divert the time and energy of the police force from areas where genuine law and order issues existed.
The court further directed stoppage of police protection to a couple who had sought protection in the wake of a civil dispute.
