The first Kudumbashree Gender Brigade in the district has been launched in Azhikode grama panchayat to involve women in disaster relief operations.

Formed under the Kudumbashree district mission, the Azhikode Community Development Society (CDS) and Gender Resource Centre, the brigade consists of women trained to carry out rescue work in disaster-hit areas.

Their responsibilities include rescue operations, provision of emergency medical aid, psychological support, shifting people to relief camps, cleaning, and food distribution.

In the first phase, CDS members form the core team, while in the next stage, interested neighbourhood and auxiliary members will be encouraged to join.

The Gender Brigade was inaugurated by panchayat president K. Ajeesh. Psychologists led a session on ‘Psychosocial care through art therapy in a disaster situation’.
