Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has cancelled the appointment of 72 guest teachers/lecturers, including 35 who do not have the prescribed qualifications and 37 from BBMP Schools and Pre-University Colleges, which have had less than 50% results in Class 10 and II PUC exams over the last three years. BBMP, which issued an order in this regard on August 22, has also temporarily withheld their remuneration.Â
The BBMP schools have recorded 55.78% results in class 10 exam, and PU colleges have recorded 68.88% results in the II PUC examination this year. Following this, the educational records of all guest teachers and lecturers in these institutions â 804 of them â were reviewed by the BBMP headquarters.Â
The review found 35 guest teachers/lecturers without the prescribed qualifications were appointed in June 2025. While most in schools passed this test, BBMP has made a Post Graduate degree with B.Ed as the educational qualification is mandatory for guest faculties of PU Colleges. However, the review found that even engineering postgraduates (BE, M.Tech) were appointed to teach Economics and Commerce subjects for PU students. Many did not have a BEd degree. BBMP has now cancelled these appointments.
In addition, the appointment of 37 faculty members who were working in BBMP schools and colleges that have achieved a result of less than 50% in class 10 and II PUC exams consistently over the past three years has been cancelled.
Speaking to The Hindu, M.Maheshwar Rao, Chief Commissioner of BBMP, said, âThe move followed a drop in SSLC and II PUC results in three years in many schools and colleges. The guest faculty, who do not have the prescribed qualifications were sacked. The pending remuneration will be given to them soon.â
Guest faculties oppose moveÂ
âMost of the guest faculty who have been fired have served in BBMP schools and colleges for more than 10 years now. Over 80% of the teaching faculty in these institutions have been guest teachers and not permanent. Most of these guest faculty are already above the age of 45, and removing them from service will make it difficult for their families to manage. There are other reasons, including the financial condition of the studentsâ parents, absence of children from school, and it is not right to hold only the guest faculty responsible for the decline in Class 10 and II PUC results,â said N.S. Somashekar, treasurer for the BBMP Officersâ and Employeesâ Welfare Association, demanding an immediate rollback of the move.Â
