The Greater Chennai City Police has permitted the organisers of Vinayagar Chaturthi celebration to install 1,519 idols across the city from Wednesday.
Last week, the top officers of Greater Chennai Police (GCP) held a meeting with 150 representatives from Hindu outfits and political parties, including the BJP, who are involved in the installation of idols, taking procession and immersion. They have issued a set of guidelines to be followed and sought the cooperation of organisers.
Following the representations from the organisers, the police now permitted the installation of 1,519 idols and worship them at public places. Police said 16,500 police personnel and 1500 Home Guards will be deployed for bandobust. Round-the-clock patrolling by police personnel will be done to ensure peaceful celebrations. The organisers were also asked to depute two volunteers at the venue where the idol has ben installed.
