The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) established shelters for transgender individuals. According to the resolution passed by the council on Tuesday, the GCC will charge a monthly rent of ₹30,946 for the shelter measuring 240.5 square meters located inAnna Nagar Zone.
“The property, owned by the GCC, had been vacant prior to this initiative. The District Social Welfare Officer for Chennai District has selected the ‘Thozhi Transgender’ organization to manage the shelter home,” stated the GCC’s resolution.
Vallalar Nagar bus stop to temporarily be shifted
The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) Council approved on Tuesday the use of a vacant land near a private school in Puzhal to serve as a temporary bus stop for Vallalar Nagar, as the construction work for a bus stand is soon set to begin. According to the resolution, the land will be provided free of cost for six months.
It stated: “The site, situated in Ward 53, Puzhal, Chennai, spans 0.73 hectares. The land, owned by the Chennai Corporation, is currently vacant with no existing structures. A total of 26 bus inspectors and 189 bus personnel are currently stationed at Vallalar Bus Stand. The temporary arrangement has been proposed to facilitate their operations.”
GCC to improve two slaughterhouses
The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) council on Tuesday approved a project for the reconstruction and improvement of slaughterhouses in two locations: Madhanakuppam Main Road, and Villivakkam.
The project will be executed by the private firm roped in by the Buildings Department in Ambattur (VII) and Anna Nagar Zone (VIII) for a total estimated cost of ₹5.66 crore. This is including refurbishing or reconstructing current structures, enhancing cleanliness, waste management, drainage and implementing measures for worker safety, public health, for a total estimated cost of ₹5.66 crore.
Each slaughterhouse will cover a built-up area of approximately 1,200 square metres. The construction work is expected to be completed within a year from the commencement date, the resolution added.
Chennai Corporation to improve green spaces in Kodambakkam
The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) council on Tuesday approved three projects under the Kodambakkam Zone (X) — the construction of a badminton court and the renovation of two playgrounds. According to the resolution, the badminton court will be built on open land at Nerkundram in TAISHA Phase II under Ward 127, while the playgrounds at Bakthavatsalalam Street under Ward 134, and Kamarajar Colony in Kodambakkam, under Ward 132, will be renovated and developed.
The release said the total estimated cost of the projects is ₹8.89 crore, which includes construction, quality control, contingency, and consultancy charges. The projects will involve upgrading facilities, improving play areas, and ensuring safety measures for users. The release added that the work is expected to be completed next year.
