A group of miscreants damaged properties at Congress office in Ramanathapuram on Tuesday.

Police said the 16-cent land was granted to the Congress party in 1960 by the King of Ramanathapuram.

Later, the land was allegedly taken over by Ganesan and Lakshmi, wife of Manoharan, who were formerly with the Congress party and later moved to Janata Dal party.

Taking control over the land, the group of people constructed buildings and collected rents from the shops for more than 50 years, police added.

But, recently, the property protection committee, formed by the Congress high command to reclaim properties belonging to the Congress party in Tamil Nadu, arrived in Ramanathapuram on July 28. This committee was headed by former Union Minister Thanga Balu.

Based on the property documents, the committee reclaimed the land, and a portion of it was turned into Ramanathapuram Taluk Congress party office.

But, on early morning of Tuesday, more than 10 people, with weapons damaged properties inside the party office.

Based on the complaint, the police have registered a complaint and further investigation is underway.
