With an aim to address sewage-related issues in the capital city, the Thiruvananthapuram corporation has initiated steps to set up a tertiary treatment plant at Muttathara sewage plant. Plans are also afoot to expand the existing drainage network to more wards. According to Mayor Arya Rajendran, the project to expand the drainage network has been tendered.
Under the project, the existing sewage line will be extended to Chakka, Pettah, Perunthanni and Kadakampally, with a total length of 11.7 km. In addition, another project to extend the line to Attukal, Ambalathara and Kalady wards has also been initiated. Currently, the drainage network in the city covers less than 50 of its total 101 wards.
The tertiary treatment plant, which will be set up alongside the existing sewage treatment plant in Muttathara, will be used to further purify the treated water to make it reusable for industrial purposes. Around 15 million litres of water can be purified per day in the tertiary treatment plant. It is expected to further bolster supply of treated water to industrial and commercial establishments, as well as for the construction sector. The Detailed Project Report has been prepared.
The civic body had earlier this year sanctioned funds for the tertiary treatment plant as well as the line extension projects.Â
