The Telangana Prisons Department has suspended three officials after a remand prisoner briefly escaped from Cherlapally Central Prison earlier this week.

Those suspended are jail warden Bharat and assistant deputy jailors Subba Raju and Vasanth Kumar, confirmed a senior officer.

On Sunday, inmate Shams Kamar, a native of Bihar, was put on wall-painting duty. Using the opportunity, he climbed the boundary wall and fled. According to prison authorities, Kamar had been lodged at Cherlapalli after his arrest by Uppal police on charges of sexually assaulting and murdering a minor. “His absence was quickly noticed, prompting officials to launch a search with special teams in coordination with local police. He was traced and caught,” said the officer.

The suspension orders were passed on August 29.
