Chennai is not just a city, but an emotion carried across centuries by its people. It is a city of balance, where the pulsating beats of gaana songs echo in North Chennai, while Carnatic music resounds in the south. There is the bustling IT corridor too, says Kanimozhi N.V.N. Somu, Rajya Sabha Member.

The city must be celebrated for its ability to adapt to cultural changes, and evolve with the times. Unlike many cities, Chennai cannot be confined to a single feature. From the rich spread of cuisines – like Sowcarpet’s North Indian delicacies – to the vibrant festivals of all the religions it embraces, the city wears the colours of every celebration as its own.

Renaming of the city as Chennai by former Chief Minister Kalaignar M. Karunanidhi in 1996 was an important move that gave it a distinct identity, rooted in its own culture and language.

Medical capital

Chennai is not just an IT hub; it also stands at the forefront of the education sector. Being a part of the medical fraternity, I have witnessed why it is called the ‘Medical Capital of India’ — it attracts patients from other countries.

Dravidian movement

It was here that the Dravidian movement grew by leaps and bounds. Students staying in large mansions in areas like Royapettah gathered for critical discussions on federalism and secularism.

Chennai is blessed with a beautiful coastline. The Marina Beach recently added another jewel to its crown with a ramp built for differently abled persons to access the beach.

I am a proud citizen of the city that is inclusive and safe for women.

(As told to K. Lakshmi)
