A single person can restore eyesight to two visually challenged individuals by pledging to donate their eyes after death, according to Dr. V. Meenakshi, Superintendent of the Government Regional Eye Hospital. She noted that the cornea must be removed within eight hours of the donor’s death.

Dr. Meenakshi flagged off an awareness rally on Sunday, organised jointly by the District Blindness Control Society (DBCS) and Mohsin Eye Bank, from the Kali temple to the YMCA on Beach Road, as part of the Eye Donation Awareness Fortnight.

As programme manager of DBCS, Dr. Meenakshi also outlined the activities being undertaken during the fortnight. Doctors including Dr. Jyothirmai of Gayatri Medical College, Dr. Tarakeswara Rao and Dr. Dharmaraju also addressed the gathering.

Eye donation counsellors distributed pamphlets highlighting the importance of eye donation. The rally saw participation from staff of the Regional Eye Hospital, students of Andhra Medical College and Government Nursing College, as well as doctors, staff, and students from LV Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI), Mohsin Eye Bank, Sankar Foundation Eye Hospital, GITAM Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (GIMSR), NRI Hospital, Visakha Eye Hospital, along with a large number of medical professionals and students.
