Thoothukudi Coastal Security Group (CSG) police seized around 2,500 kg of beedi leaves and nine cartons of tablets prescribed for treating neurological conditions, in the small hours of Monday. The consignment was allegedly intended to be smuggled to Sri Lanka.
The police said that acting on a tip-off, vehicles were checked near Vellapatti. Around 1..30 a.m., a vehicle was stopped for inspection, but the driver steered the vehicle on to the beach sand and fled.
Upon checking the vehicle, the police found 72 bundles of beedi leaves, weighing around 35 kg each along with nine cartons of tablets that are prescribed to treat neurological conditions.
The seized goods were handed over to the Customs Department for further action.
