The Kolkata Metro witnessed an all-time record in passenger footfall on Monday (September 1, 2025) with a total of 8,07,030 commuters on a single day across five corridors, Metro Railways sources told The Hindu.Â
The North-South Metro (Blue Line), which is the oldest line, carried a total of 5,83,894 passengers, while the East-West Metro (Green Line) carried 2,04,032 passengers, its highest so far.
The partially operational Yellow, Orange, and Purple Lines carried 6996, 5443, and 6665 passengers respectively.
This is the second Monday since the inauguration of three critical stretches by the Prime Minister on August 22 â the completed East-West corridor (Green Line) from Howrah Maidan to Salt Lake Sector V, the Noapara to Jai Hind (Airport) stretch on the Yellow Line, and the Beleghata to Hemanta Mukhopadhyay stretch on the Orange Line.
Notably, the much-awaited Green Line connects two major railways stations, Howrah and Sealdah, as well as the business hubs across the twin cities of Howrah, Kolkata, and Bidhannagar (also known as Salt Lake).

On Monday, the digital earnings of the Kolkata Metro crossed 40% of its total daily revenue, with a record 31,000-plus mobile QR bookings.
âThe figures we achieved on September 1 this year is a landmark achievement in the history of the Kolkata Metro. Now we are in the process of designing a traffic management plan to ease the flow of passengers,â a senior officer of the Kolkata Metro said.
They added that as of now, to manage crowds at ticket counters, the Kolkata Metro has enlisted the help of 72 cadets of Bharat Scouts and Guides of Eastern Railways who assist passengers in downloading and booking mobile QR tickets through the Aamar Kolkata Metro app on their phones.
There has been a massive surge in passengers availing the metro since the flagging off of the new metro stretches. Before August 22, an average of over 6 lakh passengers would avail the metro across all operational lines on a daily basis.Â
Parallely, there has also been a surge in passengers availing local trains, considering the large number of metro stations interconnected with railway stations. Sealdah, one of the cityâs busiest suburban railways stations, on Monday reported a daily increase of about 50,000 passengers.
