The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) officials and the newly posted officials to five corporations in the city met for the first time on Thursday, and chalked out key focus areas – potholes, streetlighting, and waste management.
Tushar Giri Nath, Additional Chief Secretary, Urban Development Department, speaking at the meeting, directing officials to focus on these three areas, said that resolving these three issues would address a majority of citizen concerns and “stressed the importance of being responsive to the needs of the public”.
Mr. Giri Nath told officials that “visible improvements must be made to reflect the administrative changes introduced through the GBA”.
“GBA and all five corporations must work in coordination to address issues in a phased manner,” he said, calling upon “all stakeholders to work together to enhance the city’s image and functionality”. He directed all corporations to take preventive measures to handle the ongoing monsoon and “upgrade traffic junctions and improve pedestrian infrastructure beyond expectations”.
GBA Commissioner M. Maheshwar Rao stressed focusing on revenue generation and improving road quality. “All corporations must promptly fill potholes and improve road quality. Micro-level planning must be implemented for mass cleanliness drives, waste removal, and elimination of waste black spots along roadsides,” he said.
He directed all city corporation commissioners to actively participate in daily virtual meetings chaired by the Special Commissioner (Revenue), GBA to streamline revenue generation and issuance of e-Khatas.
Munish Moudgil, Special Commissioner (Revenue), GBA, said that against a target of ₹6,700 crore in property tax collection this year, BBMP has already collected ₹3,217 crore, leaving ₹3,483 crore yet to be collected. BBMP issued electronic notices to 2.75 lakh property owners who owe ₹786 crore in pending tax dues. He asked all city corporations to intensify efforts to collect dues from high-default properties.
Know your corporation
Since there is confusion among the city’s residents as to which corporation their area will now belong to, the government has launched a dedicated webpage – https://www.bbmp.gov.in/KnowYourNewCorporation/, to help them learn the same. “Residents can scan the attached QR code and input their ward name or number to find out which corporation they belong to,” a statement from GBA said.
To clear confusion on the boundaries of the new corporations, GBA Commissioner M. Maheshwar Rao directed officials to immediately install name boards indicating corporation boundaries, for public clarity. He further said suitable locations have been identified for the office of each corporation, and necessary preparations must be made for the inauguration of the city corporation offices on November 1.
