Minister for IT and Industries D. Sridhar Babu invited apparel makers from Coimbatore and Tiruppur, during his visit to the textile hub of Tamil Nadu on Tuesday (September 09), to establish garment units in Telangana, as world-class infrastructure is in place across the tier-2 and tier-3 cities in the State.
Besides infrastructure, which makes the cities ideal destinations for apparel and textile industries, Telangana has abundant long-staple cotton, a crucial raw material for high-quality ready-made garments, he said, inviting Tiruppur industry leaders to participate in a forthcoming roundtable conference to be chaired by Minister for Agriculture and Textiles Tummala Nageswara Rao.
Mr. Sridhar Babu announced that after consultations with all stakeholders, “we will finalise Telangana’s new textiles policy,” the Minister’s office said in a release on his visit.
He also sought to underscore how the U.S.-imposed 50% tariffs have disrupted exports, making this a critical time for the apparel sector to explore new strategies and opportunities.
Tiruppur has grown into a global leader in apparel manufacturing and emerged as the “Knitwear capital of India,” with nearly 10,000 garment units that provide employment to lakhs of people. Around 90% of India’s cotton-based exports — casual wear, sportswear, socks, and caps — are produced in Tiruppur. He also recalled that the city has been exporting garments of international standards since the 1990s.
The Minister met Hero Fashion Group (Ramraj Cottons) chairman K.R. Nagarajan and MD Sundaramurthy and urged them to explore investments in Telangana. He also met South India Mills Association (SIMA) secretary-general K. Selvaraj and highlighted Telangana’s industry-friendly policies and ease of doing business.
The Minister held discussions with Tiruppur Exporters’ Association chairman A.Shaktivel, president K.M. Subramanian and others. He assured them that the Telangana government would provide all necessary facilities to investors. Mr. Sridhar Babu also visited the Netaji Apparel Park in Tiruppur. He was accompanied by Telangana State Industrial Infrastructure Corporation MD Shashank, the Minister’s office said.
