At least 12 doctors from various departments at the Government Medical College Hospital, Kozhikode, have been transferred to the Government Medical College, Wayanad, on a working arrangement basis.
According to sources, the order to transfer the doctors was issued on June 4. They are from departments such as anaesthesia, ophthalmology, gynaecology, paediatrics, pharmacology, microbiology, community medicine, anatomy, and forensic medicine.
This is happening at a time when the institution has been facing a rush of patients suffering from seasonal illnesses such as leptospirosis, dengue fever, Hepatitis A, and influenza. It is learnt that the transfer is on account of a scheduled visit by the National Medical Commission (NMC) to the Wayanad medical college. It is to assess issues such as the infrastructure and faculty strength. The sources said that doctors from medical colleges in Thrissur, Kottayam, Alappuzha, and Thiruvananthapuram too have been transferred there. A total of around 20 people have been posted.
However, it is not clear if these faculty members will be replaced. This has led to concerns about the reduced staff strength affecting the academic activities and patient care. Already patients are finding it difficult to get beds and many are forced to lay on the floor. After the back-to-back fire outbreaks at the accident and emergency care building, the casualty section was shifted to the old MCH building which is comparatively congested. The patients, doctors and other staff are reportedly struggling to adjust with the facilities there.
