Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation workers, along with transport department retired employees, staged a protest for fifth day in Madurai on Friday.
Their key demands included implementation of the old pension scheme for those who were recruited after April 1, 2003, and release of retirement benefits to the retired workers.
D. Sivakumar, TNSTC-CITU, who headed the protest, said that though the workers were assured they would be extended benefits under new pension scheme, it should actually be termed as ‘no pension scheme.’
“Those transport workers who retired from service in June 2023 are yet to get any of the retirement benefits like Provident Fund, gratuity and leave salary even after 25 months,” he added.
Though the Tamil Nadu government has passed a Government Order to release the benefits for 10 months, their demand was to assure them a time period to release all the pending benefits, Mr. Sivakumar noted.
Akin to other government employees, retired transport employees should also be provided medical insurance, he said.
As the retired workers due to their age-related ailments, partly due to their working condition and nature, could use the medical insurance to avoid out-of-pocket expenditure, he stated.
